Why self-custody matters

With Bitcoin, one principle applies: Whoever controls the private keys controls the Bitcoin.
If you leave your funds on exchanges or with third parties, you rely on them to stay solvent and accessible.

Goal of self-custody:
• Full control over your funds
• Independence from third parties
• Protection against restrictions or failures

The basics

Private keys & seed phrase
• Your seed phrase (typically 12/24 words) is the access to your Bitcoin
• Anyone who has it can control your funds
• Therefore: Store it offline, never share or store digitally

Understanding wallet types
• Mobile wallet (hot wallet)
For small everyday amounts (e.g. Lightning/Liquid)
• Hardware wallet (cold wallet)
For larger amounts – maximum security through offline storage
Example: BitBox02

Best practices
• Write down your seed phrase by hand (no screenshots, no cloud)
• Store backups in secure, separate locations
• Regularly verify access
• Use a hardware wallet for larger amounts

• Small amounts → Mobile wallet
• Larger amounts → Hardware wallet (self-custody)
